Hidden Past
In the early hours of 10 November, 1938, the Nazis instigated an orgy of destruction and violence against Jews. In this so-called Kristallnacht or Pogromnacht, 49 Viennese synagogues were destroyed in a couple of hours. Only one remained intact.
After the second World War the synagoges were not reconstructed, but instead, the gaps were filled with solid apartment buildings. Today there are landlords who still refuse to place a simple stone or plate on their property, commemorating this past.
